Inspiration

Our persona is Amira, 46, whose short-term disability (STD) is about to end as she moves to long-term disability (LTD). She's tired, her calendar is full of appointments, and a letter about LTD has just arrived. She isn't asking how the system works. She's asking three things:

  1. What do they already have?
  2. Who needs to send this?
  3. What do I do next?

An employer-side disability leave interview told us: "It's usually the worker that misses information, or doesn't have the medical documentation… and it would delay the claim or decision." That's one perspective, not proof of every Sun Life workflow. But it showed us the gap. Delays often come from nobody seeing what's missing, or whose job it is to send it.

What it does

Sun Life Bridge: your next step, made clearer. It supports the STD to LTD transition (pivotal moment 9). It doesn't decide or promise anything. It makes the path visible, one step at a time.

  • Transition map: answers What do they already have? Requirements are sorted into Already on file, Needs updating, and New for LTD, each with a plain status.
  • Action ownership: answers Who needs to send this? Every requirement shows who provides it. "Help me follow up" drafts a message to her clinic or HR that she edits, copies and sends herself.
  • One clear next step: answers What do I do next? Today shows a single step, with a Simple / All tasks switch. Claim forms save progress so she can stop on a hard day and resume.
  • Supporting features: Help with prepared questions for her case manager, History, an Inbox with her case manager's messages, and Privacy & Sharing showing who can see what.

How we built it

We designed the screens and presentation in Figma, then built a working prototype in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript. We used a fictional Bridge design system, with a warm neutral palette, Sun Life-inspired yellow, and a light and dark theme. We also built an animated scroll story of Amira's pain points.

Challenges

  • Designing for low energy: fewer choices on screen, plain status wording.
  • Staying within the guardrails. Bridge never promises approval and doesn't replace professional advice. Amira stays in control of what gets sent.

What we learned

Confidence comes from clarity. Showing what's on file, who owns each piece, and one next action does more than adding features.

What's next

We'd test with real members and case managers before drawing any conclusions. We haven't measured any outcomes.

All people, dates and statuses are sample data. Nothing is submitted to Sun Life.
