SUNA — Simplify. Understand. Navigate. Access. SUNA is an AI-powered, accessibility-focused Chrome extension designed to make web browsing easier for everyone, especially users with disabilities or cognitive challenges. It uses Google’s Built-in AI APIs (Prompt API, Proofreader, Translator, Summarizer, Rewriter, and more) to simplify, describe, and read aloud web content in real time.
How I Built It
SUNA is a Chrome extension built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It uses multiple Built-in AI capabilities: Prompt API to understand text, images, and voice together Translator API to read content aloud in any chosen language Rewriter API to simplify paragraphs into Grade 5, 6, or 7 reading levels TTS (Text-to-Speech) to narrate text naturally
When a user highlights text or clicks “Simplify,” SUNA sends that text to the AI model, receives a rewritten version, and speaks it aloud. When “Describe Images” is enabled, SUNA scans the page, identifies unlabeled images, and automatically generates descriptive alt text, making the web more inclusive for screen reader users.
Everything runs inside Chrome, so it stays private, fast, and fully offline once the model is downloaded.
Challenges Faced
Building SUNA was not easy. Early versions of Chrome didn’t support the LanguageModel API, so I had to check for availability and guide users to update. The model’s large size (around 20 GB) made it difficult for some devices to run, so I optimized the code and added clear feedback on system resources.
