Inspiration

The issue of litter on hiking trails has become one of the annual evaluations for officials. The lack of awareness of visitors about the importance of disposing of garbage in its place is not only bad for humans, but also for the environment. The National Park Manager has implemented luggage checks both before entering the area and when going out of the area. However, this has not been running optimally due to the lack of human resources in the national park or hiking trails. In addition, it takes a long time to check luggage and has an impact on the accumulation of queues of climbers. Therefore, we took the initiative to develop an application to help managers manage existing waste and preserve nature. With technology, the management of luggage with potential waste is carried out independently by visitors and remains connected to officers as an early prevention of potential accumulation of waste on hiking trails. Officers can re-check visitors' luggage for potential waste when they are about to leave the area.

Challanges We Ran Into

Summit needed development to be able to display educational information features for users. The lack of information technology background in the Summit team is a challenge in developing this application. In the future, the planning and design of Summit needs to be developed to achieve the initial purpose of the application. User waste data updates can be well conveyed to managers so that disaster mitigation due to waste in nature conservation areas, nature reserve areas, and potential biodiversity areas can be addressed more quickly and effectively.

Accomplishments that We’re Proud of

Visitors and mountaineers are responsible for items brought into the hiking area. Summit provides a collaborative platform for users, park managers, and volunteers to work together to keep the mountain clean and educate visitors and mountaineers on good waste management and environmentally friendly practices. In response to the current climbing trend, Summit creates an efficient one-stop connection to promote environmentalism by taking responsibility for potential litter that enters the area

What we learned

Our Summit team learned that waste management in nature can be done well starting from a good system. Connecting users and managers effectively can create a sense of care and protect each other for a beautiful environment. Summit made us believe that technology can answer the needs of human resources in managing waste. How Summit displays the adverse impacts that will occur if luggage with potential waste is left in the area by visitors is expected to increase user awareness of the environment.

Whats next for the app

Summit hopes to assist and facilitate users and managers in managing waste generated in the area. Our focus is that users are consciously able to manage their luggage with the potential for waste not to be littered. Through the reporting of potential litter, users have the responsibility to return downstairs with their own litter.

Summit is expected to connect managers with the area so that monitoring can be done more efficiently. Users can also report indications of natural damage due to the accumulation of waste at a point. In the future, features will be developed such as offline waste data update features and educational information about the dangers of waste to the ecosystem.
