Use case title:

Using AI to summarize YouTube videos to learn more and save time.

Description

YouTube is one of the best resources one can avail to learn about anything they want. There are tutorials and demo videos of everything of almost everything one can learn. It also comprises many other videos such as speeches, documentaries, and new developing genres every day. However, it also takes a lot of time to go through documentaries and tutorials. One can get this information way faster if it is in some kind of written form.

Well, the AI revolution has brought an amazing solution to this problem. Using AI, understanding, and learning through these videos is super easy now.

With AI tools such as VideoHighlight.com and Summify, not only can one save time by avoiding watching long videos, but learn about the topic more efficiently by asking questions to the AI.

In this project, I will talk about VideoHighlight as I prefer it over Summify and have used it in the past. However, it should be noted that these tools are very similar.

Tutorial for Use and Best Practices:

Step 1:

Upload the video you want to summarize or learn more about. You can do this by copying the link in the browser or copying the video link through the "Share" option available on YouTube.

Step 2:

Wait for the AI to do its work.

Step 3:

Analyze the summary! One can watch the video with the produced time stamps to make sure they understand everything and know the context.

Step 4

In this step, one can use the amazing features of VideoHighlits. If the embeddings in the video allow to do so, the user can chat with the AI to ask it questions about the topic of the video and make sure they understand everything and get the most out of the video.

Impacts on Learning:

This tool can help students in many ways, especially video-based educational content. After COVID, many students have experienced a major change in the way they learn new concepts. Many high school and college students like me rely on YouTube to understand key concepts. VideoHighlight can help students like me to learn these key concepts in a faster and more efficient manner.

VideoHiglight also helped me to collaborate with other students as a user can integrate the transcript or summary created into a Notion, which is a project management system.

The aspects that this use case adds to my learning experience are speed, efficiency, and convenience.

Firstly, as a STEM student, I have to watch a lot of informational videos and lectures to understand key concepts about that particular topic. On average, in my personal experience, these videos are around one hour long. But, with VideoHighlight, I can learn about and go through these videos in around 20 minutes. This adds up to a huge difference in my overall learning experience.

Secondly, I can ask questions about the topic of the video I uploaded to the AI in order to understand the topic better and clear my doubts. Not only does this save time, but it makes the whole learning process much more efficient. Due to tools like VideoHighlight, I feel incentivized to learn more about different topics and explore them, as I can rely on them for help.

Lastly, using this AI tool has made the whole learning experience very convenient for me. It has helped me to prepare for my exams a lot and take all the stress out of them. Using AI tools like VideoHighlights boosts my productivity, not only as a student but as a person who wants to learn.

Limitations and Ethical Considerations:

Like with almost every AI tool out there today, the accuracy of the provided results is an issue for these tools as well. Personally, I have never encountered a problem with the accuracy of the results whenever I have used VideoHighlight before.

A hindrance, or a negative side-effect, of using this tool for learning is that the student is relying on what the AI puts in the summary. By that I mean, a user cannot necessarily pick up on the small details of a lecture with such tools as they only focus on the main points of the content in the video, This may cause a problem sometimes as the AI may miss a crucial piece of information the professor or video mentions, which might not be beneficial for the student.

The main objective of the tool is to create a summary of the given video. Hence, pre-exisitng biases of the LLM used may not be a major factor of concern in this scenario. However, this problem can be solved by the students asking more questions to the AI and checking up on the retrieved information using the timestamps provided in the summary.
