🚀 SummarAIze: Revolutionizing Research and Writing

🌟 Inspiration

Research and academic writing are integral to student life, yet they are often accompanied by numerous challenges. Time management issues, difficulties understanding complex content, and language barriers frequently hinder progress, as reflected in studies showing 66% of students struggle with research completion. As students ourselves, we’ve personally experienced these obstacles and wanted to create a solution that could make the research and writing process more efficient, accessible, and effective.

We also recognize the struggles of international students who face language barriers, making it harder to comprehend academic materials. With this in mind, we envisioned SummarAIze—a tool designed to save time, simplify complex information, and make research accessible to students worldwide.

SummarAIze is a Chrome Extension that simplifies research and writing through AI-powered tools. It:

  • Summarizes lengthy articles into concise, clear summaries.
  • Provides contextual rewriting to refine or reframe text.
  • Offers translation and language detection for enhanced accessibility.
  • Stores content locally in Chrome Storage and syncs across devices using Chrome Sync, ensuring user control and accessibility anywhere. -Includes a Dark Mode option, allowing users to switch themes for comfortable use in any lighting condition. ---

🛠 How we built it

We built SummarAIze using React with TypeScript for a robust and scalable frontend, styled with Material-UI (MUI) for a modern, responsive user interface. The extension leverages Chrome’s Built-in AI APIs, including:

  • Summarization tools to extract key points from web content.
  • Contextual writing tools to refine or generate text tailored to user needs.
  • Language detection and translation APIs to enhance multilingual accessibility.

To maximize the functionality of these APIs, we meticulously followed the provided documentation and implemented advanced settings, enabling users to customize their experience with options for tone, format, and length. This approach ensures that SummarAIze delivers both flexibility and precision in its features, making it a powerful tool for research and writing.

🧩 Challenges we ran into

  • Building a Chrome Extension: As a team new to extension development, setting up the environment and understanding Chrome-specific APIs took time.
  • API Integration: Debugging issues with the Gemini API presented significant challenges. Thanks to PSA resources, we overcame bugs and optimized the integration.
  • Time Constraints: Starting late into the hackathon meant we couldn’t implement all our initial ideas.

  • Maintainable Codebase: The project’s clean and organized code allows for easy future expansion.
  • Practical Solution: We successfully addressed key pain points faced by students and researchers.

We aim to expand SummarAIze’s capabilities by connecting with more Chrome APIs and incorporating additional features:

  • Simplify Text: Rewrite content using simpler vocabulary for easier comprehension.
  • Glossary of Terms: Provide definitions and explanations for complex words and phrases.
  • Knowledge-Gap Identification: Highlight areas needing more information for better understanding.
  • Download Summaries: Allow users to export summaries in Word or PDF format.
  • Article Recommendations: Suggest relevant articles ranked by relevancy to enhance research.
