Inspiration

Families raising children with special needs often struggle to find understanding communities, qualified caregivers, and reliable Islamic guidance that addresses their unique situations. We wanted to create a platform where these families feel supported rather than isolated. Sukoon was inspired by the belief that every family deserves a welcoming community, trusted resources, and access to guidance that helps them navigate everyday challenges with confidence.

What it does

Sukoon is an AI-powered platform that supports Muslim families of children with special needs by bringing together essential resources in one place. Users can connect with verified caregivers experienced in disability support and Islamic values, discover local families with similar experiences, join peer support circles, and access authentic Islamic guidance related to disability accommodations. The AI Scholar Companion answers questions about topics such as fasting exemptions, prayer accommodations, parental concerns, and sensory-friendly worship, helping families receive guidance whenever they need it.

How we built it

We built Sukoon using Google AI Studio, where we generated and refined our application while previewing changes in real time. The AI Scholar Companion is powered by the Google Gemini API, enabling intelligent, context-aware conversations. Firebase Authentication and Cloud Firestore were used to securely manage user accounts and application data, and the project is hosted on Google AI Studio.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was finding an AI development platform that allowed us to build quickly without running into restrictive usage limits. We also spent a significant amount of time refining our idea to ensure we were solving a meaningful problem that could make a real impact. Designing features that balanced community support, accessibility, and Islamic guidance within a limited hackathon timeframe was another challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of creating a platform that addresses an often-overlooked issue affecting Muslim families with children who have special needs. We successfully integrated AI with Firebase to build a functional application that connects families with caregivers, communities, and trusted guidance. Most importantly, we're proud that our final solution grew from a simple idea into a platform with the potential to create meaningful social impact.

What we learned

This project introduced us to Google AI Studio and demonstrated how AI can significantly accelerate software development. We also learned that the strongest projects begin with identifying a genuine problem rather than simply building impressive technology. Throughout the hackathon, we discovered the importance of iterating on ideas, listening to feedback, and refining our solution until it truly addressed users' needs.

What's next for Sukoon

We plan to expand Sukoon by adding community events where families and volunteers can meet in person, helping foster greater inclusion and awareness. We also hope to introduce an interactive map that allows users to discover nearby families, caregivers, and support groups, along with direct messaging, multilingual support, additional accessibility features, and a growing library of scholar-reviewed resources. Our long-term vision is for Sukoon to become a trusted hub that strengthens connections between Muslim families, caregivers, mosques, and the wider community.
