Inspiration
SugarCurve is built by a husband-and-wife team, and it started with our own pregnancy. When we were diagnosed with gestational diabetes (GDM), we went looking for an app to help us through it and couldn't find one that fit.
Almost every tool out there was built for type 1 or type 2 diabetes. GDM is different. It shows up suddenly, it lasts a few intense months, the targets are stricter, and it ends with a baby, followed by a postnatal period that most apps ignore completely. The apps we tried could log a number. They didn't understand what it's actually like to manage GDM: cravings at 10 pm, finger pricks around a full-time job, a weekly check-in with the clinic, and the worry about what each reading means for the baby.
So we built the app we wished we'd had.
What it does
SugarCurve is a complete companion for gestational diabetes, from diagnosis through pregnancy and into the postnatal period.
- Track and analyze everything that matters for GDM: blood sugar against your personal targets, HbA1c, weight, steps, hydration, mood, nutrient intake and medication
- Free food database of 1,100+ foods with nutrition, glycemic impact and smart pairings that help blunt spikes
- Meal plans and a personal AI chef that handles cravings, can suggest meals from a photo of your fridge, helps with meal prep and builds your shopping list
- Reminders, customizable goals and targets, and journeys that adapt as your pregnancy progresses and continue after birth
- Statistics and trends, so you and your care team can see patterns instead of isolated numbers
- Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) integration, so readings flow in automatically without finger-prick logging
- Apple Health and Google Health Connect integration
- Built for Samsung Galaxy Fold devices, with layouts that make the most of the larger unfolded screen
How we built it
Through our portfolio of baby apps, Dalo Baby, we already serve thousands of families. That gave us a direct line to real parents, and a lot of the early feedback on SugarCurve came from that community.
The team is just the two of us, working with AI and with specialized medical help. AI let us move at a speed a two-person team normally can't. The medical review made sure every health statement in the app is anchored in published literature. We go further than generic advice: SugarCurve uses country-specific sources and guidelines, because GDM targets and recommendations vary between health systems.
SugarCurve launched in August 2026 on Google Play, September 2026 Apple AppStore and September 2026 on the Samsung Galaxy Store, with RevenueCat handling subscriptions across platforms. We wanted the app to be available for as many people as possible and launched it both in English, Danish, Spanish and French.
Challenges we ran into
- Moving fast with AI is easy. Moving fast and staying clinically correct is hard. Every piece of guidance had to be traced back to a source, and when guidelines differed by country, we had to support each one rather than pick a single answer.
- GDM isn't "diabetes lite." Most existing patterns, food data and thresholds come from type 1 and type 2 diabetes. We had to rethink targets, food guidance and the user journey specifically for pregnancy and postnatal life.
- Health data across ecosystems. Connecting CGMs, Apple Health and Google Health Connect, each with its own permissions and data models, while keeping the experience simple for an exhausted, pregnant user.
- Designing for foldables. Getting the app to feel native on Galaxy Fold screens meant rethinking layouts, not just stretching them.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- An open food database of 1,100+ foods, free for anyone on the web
- Free web tools for the GDM community, including a GDM blood sugar checker, a meal plan calculator and a unit converter
- 4,800+ unique website visitors and 300+ app users
- Multiple 5-star ratings and emails from users thanking us for the information and the app
- Most of all: we built something we use ourselves, our friends use it, and it makes a real difference
What we learned
- AI is incredible for building fast, but it has to be managed well. It speeds up the work. It doesn't replace judgment.
- Ship fast and focus on the MVP. Real users teach you more than another month of polishing.
- Don't be afraid to learn from your users. Our best features came from their feedback.
- Privacy and security are non-negotiable. Don't play with users data.
What's next for SugarCurve: Gestational Diabetes Coach
- Smartwatch support for Apple Watch, Wear OS and Samsung Galaxy Watch
- Working through a big backlog of user feedback, starting with home-screen widgets and live notifications
- AI voice logging, so you can log a meal or reading hands-free
- Continuing to improve the core: faster logging, smarter insights and a better postnatal journey
