Inspiration

We were inspired by a story we heard on The Happiness Lab with Dr. Laurie Santos, where a guest described how his young daughter started burning up in the middle of the night. They rushed her to the hospital, and that's where they learned she had type 1 diabetes. It stuck with us how quickly an ordinary night can turn into an emergency, and how much a family has to watch for afterward, especially while everyone is asleep.

Monitors beep, but a beep is just a number. Someone still has to wake up, work out what's happening, and act. We wanted to build something that manages the response, and that feels like a friend to a child instead of a medical device.

What it does

Sweet Dreams is a cuddly buddy that looks after a child with type 1 diabetes, day and night.

  • Predicts, doesn't just react. It watches a glucose trend and warns when a low is coming, before it arrives.
  • Wakes gently. The buddy glows and speaks softly to the child, with no scary numbers.
  • Escalates until they're safe. If the child doesn't respond, it alerts a parent, then a second caregiver, then prompts a call for emergency help.
  • Checks in during the day with friendly "how are you feeling?" moments.
  • Writes a morning summary for the parent of what happened overnight and how it was handled.

How we built it

  • NVIDIA Nemotron is the agent's brain. It judges how urgent a situation is, picks each next step from a toolbox (change the glow, speak to the child, alert a parent, alert a second caregiver, prompt an emergency call, wait and recheck), and writes the gentle child-friendly lines and the morning summary. It loops (think, act, check) until the child is safe.
  • Safety rules in plain code sit underneath the AI. Timers force escalation if nobody responds, and the toolbox has no insulin or dosing tool at all. If the AI is slow or offline, the rules still make sure help happens.
  • A web app shows the buddy's face and glow, a big "I'm awake" button for the child, a mock parent phone that receives alerts, the flower garden, and a live "thinking" panel so you can watch each of Nemotron's steps.
  • A fast-forward control lets us replay a whole night in under a minute for demos.
  • Simulated inputs: a fake glucose feed, simulated temperature, and a simulated "asleep / moving" signal, all clearly labeled as simulated in the app.
