Inspiration I wanted to create a short, humorous film built around a very simple idea: a man whose obsession with sugar turns into a small personal drama. Halloween offered the perfect context—an evening meant for sharing sweets—while my character does the exact opposite. The contrast between a serious tone and a ridiculous subject was the spark for the film.
What it does Sugar Lover tells the story of a man overwhelmed by his sugar addiction. The film follows him with a mock-serious tone, exaggerating his emotional turmoil around candies while keeping the humor dry and understated. The result is a playful portrait of a character who takes his sugar habits far too seriously. How we built it The film was created entirely with AI-generated visuals combined with traditional editing. I used image and video generation models to design the characters and scenes, then refined everything using classic filmmaking tools. Editing, timing, narrative rhythm, camera movement, and sound design were all shaped manually in a standard post-production workflow. Particular attention was given to lighting and color grading to maintain a cohesive visual identity and reinforce the pseudo-documentary tone.
Challenges we ran into One of the main challenges was keeping the mockumentary flavor natural—slightly exaggerated but never cartoonish. Fine-tuning character expressions, controlling the visual consistency across AI shots, and achieving the right comedic timing required many iterations. Another challenge was preserving a cinematic look while staying within the limits of AI models, especially for continuity, lighting, and subtle performance cues.
Accomplishments that we're proud of I’m proud of achieving a consistent visual style, a clean color palette, and a cinematic feel throughout the film. The balance between dryness, absurdity, and seriousness worked exactly as intended, and the film maintains a smooth flow from start to finish while relying heavily on AI tools.
What we learned I learned how to blend AI-generated material with traditional filmmaking techniques to maintain control over pacing, tone, and visual cohesion. The project taught me new ways of directing performance, lighting, and narrative structure even when the footage is generated rather than shot.
⭐ What’s next for Sugar Lover I am currently developing a new humorous short film built around a very different character: a fallen Santa Claus portrayed like a weary, misunderstood superhero. After a devastating reindeer pandemic, repeated elf strikes at the toy factory, and the collapse of his marriage, this Santa spirals downward—he drinks, crashes his sleigh on Fifth Avenue, and eventually ends up in jail. His journey toward redemption comes in the form of court-ordered community service, approached with the same dry, ironic tone as Sugar Lover. The project keeps the humor but explores the mythology of Christmas in a fresh, slightly darker, and more cinematic way. It’s the next step in my exploration of AI-assisted storytelling and character-driven comedy.
