Inspiration
Educational institutions have long overlooked the importance of teaching students how to learn effectively. This lack of emphasis on learning methods leads to students feeling incapable and misunderstood when traditional teaching approaches don't work for them. Negative thoughts and emotional distress hinder their learning and growth. With the pandemic, students have become adept at online learning and independent information searching. We believe they are ready to explore and discover learning methods that suit them best. Our goal is to provide a website that summarizes and introduces various learning methods, enabling users to practice, test, and find their ideal approach. So our aim was to create an informative website highlighting three key learning methods and offering a questionnaire for users to assess their preferences and strengths.
What it does
Introduce three learning methods, which are highlight text, visualize stuff and tabular method.
For each method, users will experience the process below:
- Read a simple description of the method.
- Look at a passage and try memorising without the method.
- Start a timer and take a 10-minute break.
- Answer 10 questions and submit to see the result.
- Learn the method.
- Start a timer and take a 10-minute break.
- Answer 10 questions and submit to see the result.
- By comparing the results, conclude whether this method is suitable
How we built it
After brainstorming ideas during a Zoom call, we selected a feasible concept considering our skills and time constraints. Each team member focused on specific pages related to different methods. For instance, Member A handled all the pages for the visualization method, while Member D integrated and standardized the content. The final day was dedicated to debugging and submission.
Challenges we ran into
Being a newly formed team, we initially faced challenges due to different work paces, sleep schedules, and response times. However, we resolved these issues, aligning our goals and finding a compromise. Learning technical skills, such as using GitHub to collaborate or creating an HTML timer, also took some time, adding pressure due to time constraints. Nevertheless, we supported each other with resources and overcame these obstacles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our ability to brainstorm and ideate quickly. We were very analytical when making our choice and we were quick to build a development plan. We are also proud of our adaptability and ability to learn quickly. We picked up the required skills in less than a day to code out a full website, with even a timer feature. It was also hard making modals but we came a long way.
What we learned
Through extensive research, we have gained knowledge not only on different learning methods but also on HTML and CSS. As a team of students unfamiliar with these technologies, we dedicated time to learn and experiment. We also learned how to divide tasks efficiently, allowing us to merge different components seamlessly.
What's next for [Subway-Surfers] MEMOrise
We will focus on improving the user experience based on feedback that we receive after a wide-scale testing. We will also be adding more memorisation methods and perhaps expand beyond memorisation to study techniques in general where memorisation is a subcategory. Another feature we plan to implement a feature to record all their test results and do a comparative analysis across the different methods to provide them their most optimal method, but unfortunately we do not have the time to learn the technical skill and implement it.
