Inspiration
The inspiration for Subreddit Conquest stems from the idea of transforming the Reddit community into an interactive gaming experience. By combining the competitive and collaborative spirit of subreddits with classic strategy games, word puzzles, and tabletop mechanics, we wanted to create a fun, engaging game that brings users together while leveraging Reddit's unique platform features.
What it does
Subreddit Conquest is a multiplayer, strategy-based game where players battle for control over a virtual map of a subreddit.
Each "territory" is represented as a Reddit post containing a unique challenge (word games, puzzles, or riddles). Players solve these challenges to claim or defend territories. Community members can join in by creating challenges or providing hints in the comments. A leaderboard tracks top players and teams, encouraging continuous engagement.
How we built it
Devvit (Reddit Developer Platform):
Interactive posts were used to host challenges and manage gameplay. Backend:
Scripts powered by Python automated scorekeeping, tile ownership updates, and player actions. Firebase was used to store game state, challenges, and player data. Frontend:
The map was visualized using dynamic images with overlays to represent tile ownership. User Interaction:
Reddit's API and interactive post features allowed seamless gameplay within the subreddit.
