Inspiration
We were tired of getting hit with surprise subscription renewals every month. Like many people, we'd forget about that streaming service we signed up for or that productivity app we tried once. The "gotcha" moment when you see unexpected charges on your credit card was happening too often. We realized millions of people face this same frustration, so we set out to build a solution that would give users complete control over their subscription spending.
What it does
Submind is a smart subscription tracker that helps users manage all their recurring payments in one beautiful app. It tracks popular services like Netflix, Spotify, and Adobe Creative Cloud, providing calendar views of renewals, smart reminders before billing dates, and detailed analytics showing spending patterns. Users can organize subscriptions by categories, set custom tags, assign payment methods, and view beautiful statistics about their highest and lowest paying services. Home screen widgets provide quick access to upcoming renewals without opening the app.
How we built it
We built Submind natively for iOS using SwiftUI to ensure optimal performance and a truly native experience across iPhone and iPad. We focused on creating intuitive data visualization for spending analytics, implementing flexible reminder systems with precise timing controls, and designing beautiful home screen widgets. The app uses Core Data for local storage, ensuring user privacy while providing fast, responsive performance.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was designing a reminder system that actually works reliably across different iOS versions and user settings. We also spent considerable time perfecting the analytics visualizations to make complex subscription data easy to understand at a glance. Balancing feature richness with simplicity was crucial - we wanted powerful capabilities without overwhelming users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're most proud of creating an app that genuinely solves a universal problem. The beautiful, intuitive design works seamlessly across all iOS devices, and our analytics provide insights users never knew they needed. We've built something that transforms a frustrating experience (managing subscriptions) into something users actually enjoy. The precision of our reminder system and the elegance of our widgets showcase the quality we aimed for.
What we learned
We learned that subscription management isn't just about tracking payments - it's about empowering users with information and control. Good design isn't just about aesthetics; it's about making complex data instantly understandable. We also discovered the importance of reliable notifications and how crucial it is to respect user privacy while providing powerful analytics.
What's next for Submind
We're planning to add family sharing features so households can track shared subscriptions together. We want to implement spending budgets and alerts when users exceed their subscription limits. We're also exploring AI-powered suggestions to help users identify unused or redundant subscriptions. Long-term, we'd love to expand to other platforms while maintaining the native experience users love.
