Inspiration

Originally, one of our group members brought up the idea of creating a marketplace to make it easier for students to find rental apartments. When we conducted our market research, we realized that their were a lot of solutions already presented on the table, but none of them were directly catered to students. Michael, one of our groupmates, was having a hard time subleasing his own apartment and decided to present the idea that we cater directly to students, and only for students through .edu email verification.

What it does

Sublettee is a marketplace for students to list their subleases and find housing within their respective college towns with their amenities they choose.

How we built it

Sublettee is a web application created using ReactJS/NodeJS, MongoDB, Python (Flask), HTML and CSS.

Challenges we ran into

User Authentication and Database initialization were two of the biggest hurdles we had to overcome, it was a huge time sink and we tried learning new technologies, but couldn't get over the technical barrier. We decided to pivot to more familiar technologies and utilize them to the best of our abilities within the given timeframe.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Setting up the database, swapping from AWS to MongoDB, and setting up auth0.

What we learned

Unfortunately we fell short and got too ambitious, with the three of us taking on more challenges then we thought for our first Hackathon. We did not get the MVP finished.

What's next for Sublettee

Refactoring code and renewing the college rental scene. We want to continue building our subleasing platform until we reach a MVP, and release it for students to use. We then would like to scale to other colleges and collect user feedback.
