Inspiration

Every day, people blindly click "I Agree" without understanding the terms. Inspired by personal frustration and alarming studies on unread ToS, we built SubClause to bring transparency and clarity to the legal fine print that rules our digital lives.

What it does

SubClause takes any legal document—Terms of Service, Privacy Policies, EULAs—and transforms them into understandable summaries. It highlights red flags, rates transparency, and explains complex clauses in plain English, all using GPT-4 Turbo.

How we built it

We built SubClause entirely with Bolt, leveraging React + TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo API. The UI is fully responsive, supports dark mode, and includes real-time clause highlighting with actionable insights.

Challenges we ran into

  • Handling long-form documents while preserving analysis quality
  • Making legal explanations both accurate and accessible
  • Designing a UX that balances aesthetics with usability
  • Managing API limits during high-volume testing

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a full-stack AI legal analyzer in record time
  • Designed an elegant UI that’s both informative and beautiful
  • Integrated GPT-4 with rich text parsing and clause-level detection
  • Fully responsive and production-ready in one go, thanks to Bolt

What we learned

  • GPT-4 can power truly helpful legal understanding when guided well
  • Design clarity matters just as much as smart AI logic
  • Bolt significantly speeds up development without sacrificing quality
  • Legal UX is an underrated and necessary frontier for consumer trust

What's next for SubClause

  • Browser extension for real-time ToS analysis
  • More languages and localization support
  • Community-driven flagging of concerning companies or clauses
  • Partnering with consumer rights organizations for real-world impact
