Inspiration

Our inspiration stems from a UTD tutoring program, Peer-Lead Team Learning (PLTL). Three of our members were participants together in a PLTL session last semester, and all heavily benefited from the program as it emphasized learning and teaching others together as a team. We wanted to emulate a similar space with StuSync, where the point of participating is to become a more outgoing learner and to learn through teaching others.

Why does this matter?

Dunnu and Mykel referenced how recent generations have become secluded, and this phenomena is observed even more at UTD to the point that some students consider our campus to be antisocial. With StuSync, we want to cultivate a culture of mutualistic learning at UTD and enhance not only the technical and theoretical skills of our users, but also the soft skills that will awe employers.

Why should you use it?

If you want to give yourself a healthy push out of your comfort zone and have an advantage in your applications, StuSync was made just for you. Employers love people that can teach others and pass on their technical skills to help the whole company excel.

Challenges we ran into

We ran out of free Gemini tokens on some systems to properly demo generating practice questions in study sessions. The Expo Go mobile app to run our project as an app also frequently crashes on two members' phones.

Tech stack

JavaScript, TypeScript, React Native, Tailwind CSS for styling, Expo for mobile port. Supabase for the backend, database, and authentication.

StuSync in the future!

We have several stretch features we'd love to implement:

  • General study sessions with no specified class; participants can contribute their own study topics to the itinerary with the host's permission
  • "Interview Prep" study sessions where attendees can give context for the company and role they're applying for into the itinerary
  • Participants being able to check into rooms with an NFC tag or QR code in the room The end goal is for this app to have different workspaces (similar to Handshake) for universities other than UTD, that way different campuses can enjoy StuSync as well.
  • More variety in study session games and activities (to emphasize sticky game design)
