The Story

Imagine group studying revolutionized. Wait, you might be thinking why group studying? Because collaboration works. This event itself is evidence of how collaborative learning benefits students not only in individual growth but also in gaining collective knowledge.

We wanted to take this powerful concept and bring it into the classroom, specifically for conceptual learning. Just like we see here at SwampHacks, where teams unite and thrive, we believe studying can be more than just individual effort—it can be a dynamic, shared experience.

About

StudyUp is a game designed for a minimum of 2 players. You start on a welcome screen, where you can click to enter the lobby. Next, click "+ Add Player" and enter the corresponding names. Once everyone is ready, click "Start Studying!" Then you will be directed to choose your study set. After choosing your set, the app will use a roulette to select the next player.

Each player takes turns placing the phone on their forehead, while the rest of the group gives clues. If the player answers correctly, they turn the phone down. If they can’t figure it out, they can turn the phone up to pass. After 30 seconds, the app shows you the terms you got right and the ones you missed.

The game continues until all players have participated. Then you can review the leaderboard stats to see how everyone did! It’s a fun, competitive, and collaborative way to study and track your progress!

Now, you might be wondering, how are we different from other study tools? What makes StudyUp special is how it bridges the gap between individual study and interactive learning. It's not just about one person trying to guess the definition—it’s about the entire group being involved in the learning process. It’s a two-way street; the person giving the clues needs to understand the definition just as much as the person guessing.

Challenges Faced + What We Learned

Some challenges we faced included being new hackers and new to the technologies we used. React Native was a language we were not familiar with previous to this experience. There was a specific instance where we could not understand how to use a custom font. Luckily, we figured it out with teamwork and time, however, it was certainly a roadblock for us. Overall, we learned that we can truly do amazing things with hard work, collaboration, and persistence.
