StudySync

Inspiration

Students have a lot to manage every day: assignments, exams, deadlines, classes, projects, and independent study. When this information is spread across notebooks, messages, calendars, and different apps, it becomes easy to forget something or struggle to decide what to work on first.

We wanted to build something that focuses on a simple question:

What should I focus on right now?

That idea led to StudySync, an AI-powered student companion designed to bring school tasks, planning, and focused learning into one place.

What StudySync Does

StudySync gives students a single workspace for managing their school life.

Students can organize:

  • Assignments and deadlines
  • Upcoming exams
  • Class schedules
  • Study tasks
  • Priorities
  • Personalized study plans
  • Focus sessions

Instead of simply displaying a list of tasks, StudySync is designed to help students understand what needs attention first.

For example, a student can add a difficult Physics assignment due in two days. StudySync can use the deadline, estimated workload, and priority to help break the work into manageable study sessions.

The goal is not to make students spend more time organizing their work. The goal is to help them spend more time actually learning.

AI Study Assistant

StudySync includes an AI-powered study assistant that can work with the student's academic context.

Instead of asking a generic chatbot:

"What should I study?"

a student can ask StudySync:

"What should I study tonight?"

The assistant can consider upcoming deadlines, unfinished assignments, exams, and priorities to help create a practical study plan.

This makes AI useful as part of the student's workflow rather than simply another chat interface.

How We Built It

StudySync is built as a modern full-stack web application using:

  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Vite
  • Tailwind CSS
  • FastAPI
  • Python
  • SQLite
  • SQLAlchemy
  • JWT authentication
  • Google Gemini AI

The application uses a React frontend connected to a FastAPI backend. Authentication, assignments, study sessions, community features, announcements, profiles, and other student data are handled through the backend API.

The AI study assistant is powered by Google's Gemini API and is designed to work alongside the student's existing academic context.

The project is also deployed as a live web application, with the frontend and backend hosted separately.

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was making the different parts of the student experience work together instead of feeling like separate features.

We had to connect authentication, student profiles, assignments, study planning, AI assistance, community features, announcements, and focus sessions into one consistent workflow.

Deployment was another important challenge. The application needed to work outside the development environment, so we configured the frontend and backend as separate production services and solved issues involving environment variables, API connectivity, and CORS.

These challenges helped us turn StudySync from a collection of features into a working full-stack application.

What We Learned

Through building StudySync, we learned that a useful student application is not just about adding more features. The features need to work together around the student's actual workflow.

We also gained practical experience with:

  • Full-stack React and FastAPI development
  • REST API design
  • Authentication and authorization
  • Database integration
  • AI API integration
  • Production deployment
  • Environment and security configuration
  • Connecting a frontend and backend across different production services

What's Next

StudySync is designed as a foundation that can continue to grow.

Future improvements could include more advanced personalized study recommendations, richer progress analytics, improved AI planning, deeper calendar integration, and additional tools that help students understand their learning habits.

Our long-term vision is to make StudySync more than a task manager — a student workspace that helps answer one important question throughout the day:

What should I focus on next?

Built For Students

Help students spend less time figuring out what to do and more time learning.
