StudySync AI - Hackathon Submission

Inspiration

As students ourselves, we've experienced the frustration of traditional learning tools. Most AI assistants simply hand over answers, creating a dangerous dependency that undermines true understanding. We asked ourselves: "What if AI could teach like the greatest educators in history?"

Inspired by Socrates' method of teaching through questions, we envisioned an AI that guides students to discover answers themselves. The current education system often prioritizes rote memorization over deep comprehension. StudySync AI was born from the belief that learning should be an active journey, not a passive download of information.

We also recognized that modern students juggle multiple resources - scattered notes, lengthy recordings, and endless textbooks. There had to be a better way to consolidate and truly understand study materials.

What it does

StudySync AI is a comprehensive AI-powered learning platform that transforms how students study:

Socratic Learning Mode: Instead of giving direct answers, the AI asks thought-provoking questions that guide students toward understanding. It's like having a personal tutor who knows exactly when to push you further.
AI Chat Assistant: Get help with any topic through natural conversation with context-aware responses and real-time streaming.
Voice Notes Transcription: Record lectures or study sessions, and let AI transcribe and intelligently structure your notes.
Smart Summarization: Upload lengthy study materials and receive concise, well-organized summaries highlighting key concepts.
Quiz Generator: Automatically generate quizzes from your notes to test retention and identify knowledge gaps.
Secure Authentication: Email OTP verification ensures your study data remains private and secure.

How we built it

We chose a modern, scalable tech stack:

The architecture follows a modular approach:

Route Groups: Organized into (auth), (dashboard), and (landing) for clean separation
Context Providers: Centralized state management for auth and theme
API Routes: RESTful endpoints handling AI interactions securely
Streaming Responses: Real-time AI output using server-sent events

Challenges we ran into

1. Implementing True Socratic Dialogue

The biggest challenge was engineering prompts that make AI question rather than answer. We iterated extensively on prompt engineering to achieve the right balance of guidance without giving away solutions.

2. Real-time Streaming with Edge Compatibility

Getting smooth streaming responses on Vercel's edge network required careful handling of the Groq API's streaming format and proper chunking.

3. Dark Mode Hydration Issues

React's hydration mismatch with localStorage-based theme persistence caused flickering. We solved this with careful client-side rendering strategies and default state management.

4. Voice Transcription Accuracy

Ensuring accurate transcription of academic content with technical terminology required fine-tuning the processing pipeline.

5. Context Management Across Routes

Maintaining authentication state seamlessly across protected routes while preventing memory leaks was complex with Next.js App Router.

Zero Dependencies on Expensive APIs: Using Groq's free tier makes this accessible to all students.
