Inspiration
I noticed that many students experience stress and anxiety because they are not aware of their daily spending. Financial uncertainty often affects mental well-being and academic focus. I was inspired to build StudySpend to help students manage their expenses in a simple, calm, and stress-free way.
What it does
StudySpend is a student-focused expense tracking web application. It allows users to add daily expenses, view all expenses, see total spending, and mark expenses as reviewed. This helps students become more mindful of their spending habits and reduce financial stress.
How we built it
I built StudySpend using Python and Flask for the backend, along with HTML and CSS for the frontend. Flask handles routing and logic, while the interface is designed with a clean and minimal layout to keep the experience easy and calming for users.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was keeping the application simple while still useful. I had to avoid adding too many features that could overwhelm users. Designing a calm and intuitive interface that supports mental well-being was also a challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of creating a fully functional and user-friendly application that solves a real problem for students. The expense tracking, review feature, and clean design make StudySpend practical and supportive of mental health.
What we learned
Through this project, I learned how closely financial awareness is connected to mental health. I also improved my skills in Flask development, frontend design, and building applications with a strong focus on user experience.
What's next for StudySpend
Next, I plan to add user authentication, database storage, monthly budget limits, and spending insights. I also want to include mental wellness tips based on spending behavior and improve mobile responsiveness.
