Inspiration modern study tools—switching between Notion for notes, Discord for group study, Quizlet for flashcards, and ChatGPT for tutoring. This constant context switching breaks focus and
kills productivity. We asked: What if there was one unified
workspace that brought all these tools together, enhanced by AI?

The inspiration came from observing how successful SaaS products like Linear and Notion create seamless experiences. We wanted to bring that same level of polish and integration to
student productivity, making studying feel less like a chore
and more like a flow state.

What it does

StudyRoom is an AI-powered collaborative study workspace that
unifies everything students need in one beautiful interface:

  • Dashboard — Track study streaks, focus hours, and productivity analytics with visual charts
  • Notes — Notion-style collaborative editor with rich text,
    slash commands, and AI assistance
  • Study Rooms — Discord-inspired spaces for real-time collaboration with shared timers and group chat
  • AI Tutor — ChatGPT-like interface for personalized tutoring, quiz generation, and study summaries
  • Flashcards — Quizlet-style spaced repetition with AI-generated decks and progress tracking
  • Whiteboard — Collaborative canvas for mind mapping and visual brainstorming
  • Focus Mode — Pomodoro timer with ambient sounds and distraction-free environment

How we built it

We built StudyRoom as a modern frontend-first application
using:

  • Next.js 15 with App Router for optimal performance and SEO
  • TypeScript for type safety and better developer experience
  • TailwindCSS for rapid, consistent styling
  • shadcn/ui for beautiful, accessible component primitives
  • Framer Motion for smooth animations and micro-interactions
  • Recharts for data visualization in analytics dashboards
  • Tiptap for the rich text editor with slash commands

The architecture follows a modular approach with clean separation between server and client components. We prioritized a dark-mode-first design with glassmorphism effects, creating a premium SaaS aesthetic that feels professional and modern.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was scope management. With so many
features inspired by multiple successful products, we had to
resist the urge to build everything at once. We learned to:

  1. Phase development — Build the foundation first, then iterate on individual modules
  2. Maintain consistency — Ensure all features feel cohesive
    despite different inspirations
  3. Balance complexity — Keep the codebase maintainable while
    delivering rich functionality
  4. Performance optimization — Handle real-time collaboration
    features without sacrificing speed

We also faced challenges with state management across multiple collaborative features, requiring careful architecture decisions to ensure smooth user experiences.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Production-grade UI — Achieved a polished, SaaS-quality
    interface that rivals commercial products
  • Modular architecture — Built a scalable codebase that can
    easily accommodate new features
  • Comprehensive feature set — Delivered 7 major modules in a
    cohesive experience
  • Responsive design — Ensured the workspace works beautifully
    across desktop, tablet, and mobile
  • Dark mode excellence — Created a stunning dark-first design
that reduces eye strain during long study sessions

What we learned

This project taught us invaluable lessons about:

  • Modern frontend architecture — Deepened our understanding of Next.js 15, React Server Components, and the latest web
    development patterns
  • UI/UX design — Learned how to create intuitive interfaces
    that balance power with simplicity
  • Component libraries — Mastered shadcn/ui and learned when to build custom components vs. use primitives
  • TypeScript best practices — Improved our ability to write
    type-safe, maintainable code
  • Product thinking — Developed skills in prioritizing features and creating cohesive user experiences

What's next for StudyRoom — Collaborative Study Workspace

The future of StudyRoom includes:

  • Real-time collaboration — WebSocket integration for live
editing, presence indicators, and synchronized study sessions
  • AI integration — Connect to Claude/GPT APIs for intelligent
tutoring, automatic flashcard generation, and smart study
    recommendations
  • Backend services — User authentication, data persistence, and cloud sync across devices
  • Mobile apps — Native iOS and Android applications for
    studying on the go
  • Study analytics — Advanced insights on learning patterns,
optimal study times, and knowledge retention
  • Community features — Public study rooms, shared decks, and
    peer learning networks

We believe StudyRoom has the potential to transform how
millions of students learn, making education more collaborative, personalized, and enjoyable.
