Inspiration

During the holiday season, online scams increase dramatically. Fake giveaways, phishing emails, and fraudulent shopping deals take advantage of excitement, urgency and trust. Many people especially students and first time internet users don’t know how to identify these scams until they’ve already lost money or personal information. ScamShield was inspired by the need to protect users during high risk festive periods through awareness, education and simple detection tools.

What it does

ScamShield is a holiday focused scam awareness and detection web platform that helps users identify and avoid online scams. It allows users to: Check suspicious messages, emails or links using the Scam Checker Learn about common holiday scams through the Education Hub Test their knowledge using interactive scam awareness quizzes Create an account to track learning progress and engagement The platform focuses on prevention, education and digital safety especially during the holiday season when scams peak.

How I built it

ScamShield was built as a full-stack web application using: HTML & CSS for structure and responsive UI JavaScript for interactivity and user experience PHP for backend logic and request handling SQL & MySQL for data storage, including users, quizzes and scam patterns The system analyzes common scam indicators such as urgency language, suspicious keywords and risky URLs to provide clear risk feedback to users.

Challenges I ran into

One of the biggest challenges was balancing simplicity with usefulness making the scam detection logic understandable while still effective. Another challenge was ensuring the platform stayed educational and helpful without generating false confidence or misleading results. Structuring content to be clear, festive and informative also required careful design choices.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Building a functional full-stack application within hackathon time limits Creating a clean, user-friendly interface with a clear holiday theme Designing an educational flow that combines detection, learning and testing Delivering a real-world solution that addresses an urgent seasonal problem

What I learned

Through ScamShield, I strengthened my full-stack development skills and learned how to: Design systems around real user problems Translate cybersecurity concepts into simple educational tools Structure a project for impact, usability and scalability Communicate technical ideas clearly to non-technical users

What's next for ScamShield

Improving scam detection accuracy with more advanced pattern analysis Adding support for SMS and social media scam detection Expanding educational content beyond holidays Introducing community reporting for emerging scam trends ScamShield has the potential to grow into a year-round digital safety platform that protects users worldwide.
