Inspiration

We noticed that students often struggle not because learning resources are unavailable, but because it is difficult to stay consistent, know what to study next, and understand where they are actually weak.

We wanted to build something that could act like a personal study companion — one that can answer questions, help create a study plan, generate quizzes, and track learning progress. This idea led us to build StudyPilot AI.

What it does

StudyPilot AI is an AI-powered learning platform that helps students learn, practice, and track their progress in one place.

Students can use the Gemini-powered AI Assistant to ask questions, understand difficult concepts, and get explanations across different subjects. The platform can also create personalized study plans and generate quizzes for practice.

One of our main features is the real-time learning streak and activity heatmap. Completed study sessions, quizzes, and learning activities are recorded and visualized through a GitHub-style heatmap.

The dashboard shows current streak, longest streak, active days, study time, and learning progress using real user activity.

How we built it

We built StudyPilot AI using a modern full-stack approach.

  • Gemini API – AI assistant, explanations, study planning, and quiz generation
  • Google AI Studio – AI development and experimentation
  • Firebase Authentication – secure user login
  • Cloud Firestore – storing user-specific learning data
  • React – frontend interface
  • Google Cloud Run – application deployment
  • GitHub – version control and project management

We designed the application around real-time data. Each authenticated user has their own learning records, and Firestore real-time listeners update the dashboard, streak, and heatmap whenever new activity is completed.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was making the learning activity system work with real-time data instead of dummy or predefined records.

We also had to think carefully about user data isolation so that one student could never access another student's learning information.

Integrating the Gemini-powered features with the rest of the application was another challenge. We had to balance useful AI responses with a simple and responsive user experience.

Deploying and connecting the application with Google Cloud services also helped us understand the practical side of taking an AI application from development to deployment.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that StudyPilot AI is more than just a chatbot.

We created a complete learning workflow where a student can:

Plan → Learn → Practice → Evaluate → Track Progress

We are especially proud of the real-time streak and activity heatmap because it represents actual student activity rather than randomly generated data.

We also successfully brought together Gemini, Firebase, Firestore, and Google Cloud Run into a single working application.

What we learned

This project taught us that building an AI application is not only about connecting an API and generating responses.

We learned about authentication, database design, real-time updates, user-specific data security, API integration, deployment, and designing AI features around an actual user problem.

We also learned how important it is to keep the application simple for the user while handling complex processes in the backend.

What's next for StudyPilot

We want to continue improving StudyPilot AI by making the learning experience even more personalized.

Some of our next ideas include:

  • 📊 AI-based identification of weak topics
  • 🧠 Adaptive quizzes based on previous performance
  • 🎯 Personalized learning recommendations
  • 📅 Smarter study scheduling
  • 📈 More detailed learning analytics
  • 🏆 Achievements and learning milestones
  • 🔔 Smart study reminders
  • 🎓 Support for more subjects and learning styles

Our long-term goal is to make StudyPilot AI a complete personal learning companion that helps students not only find answers, but actually improve the way they learn.
