Inspiration

Students often struggle not because they lack the motivation to study, but because they don't know where to start, what to prioritize, or how to manage their time effectively. With multiple subjects, assignments, and exam deadlines, creating and following a realistic study plan can become overwhelming.

This inspired us to build StudyPilot AI, an AI-powered study companion that helps students turn their study goals into a clear, actionable plan.

What It Does

StudyPilot AI brings essential study tools together in one platform:

Personalized Study Plans: Generate study plans based on subjects, deadlines, and available study hours. AI Study Assistant: Ask study-related questions, receive recommendations, and identify which tasks to prioritize. Task Management: Organize study activities and mark tasks as completed. Progress Tracking: Monitor progress through a centralized dashboard. Pomodoro Timer: Structure focused study sessions and encourage productive study habits. Weekly Schedule: Organize study sessions and export schedules to a calendar.

How We Built It

We built StudyPilot AI using React, Vite, and Tailwind CSS for the frontend, with Python and FastAPI powering the backend. We used SQLite and SQLAlchemy for data persistence and integrated the Google Gemini API to support AI-powered study assistance.

We also implemented deterministic fallback logic for supported assistant functionality so that the application can still provide useful responses when AI generation is unavailable.

Challenges We Faced

One of our main challenges was making the AI assistant provide relevant recommendations instead of repetitive, generic responses. We improved its handling of different study-related questions and incorporated actual student task information into its context.

Another challenge was managing AI availability and API quota limitations. We worked on fallback behavior and clearer AI status reporting to make the application more resilient and help users understand its current operating mode.

We also refined the interface to improve responsiveness and make navigation easier across different screen sizes.

What We Learned

Building StudyPilot AI helped us understand how to integrate generative AI into a practical application, connect a frontend with backend services, manage persistent data, and design useful fallback behavior when external services are unavailable.

We also learned that a good AI-powered product needs more than a language model. It requires relevant context, reliable application logic, clear feedback, and an interface that makes the technology genuinely useful.

What's Next

We envision expanding StudyPilot AI with more advanced learning analytics, adaptive study recommendations, and additional personalization based on students' progress and learning patterns.

Our goal is to make studying more organized, focused, and manageable, helping students spend less time planning and more time learning.
