About the Project
I sit, I study, my back feels fine,
But hours pass, and I start to decline.
Slouching here, a curve in my spine,
I need a reminder – something divine!
Enter StudyPat, to the rescue it came,
A platform for learning and posture to claim.
With a camera to watch and alerts that pop up,
It keeps me on track, no slouching, no hiccup!
As a third-year computer engineering student, I spend a significant portion of my day sitting at a desk with my laptop. I start my study sessions with great posture and a straight back, but over time, I find myself slouching, and by the end of an hour, I'm in a completely different position from where I started. This inspired me to create StudyPat – a learning platform that integrates a posture detection feature to help users maintain good posture while studying.
Using StudyPat, you can enable visual monitoring via your laptop's camera, which triggers notifications whenever your posture slips into an unhealthy position. It's a gentle reminder to sit up straight, keeping you both focused and comfortable.
Another personal challenge I faced was my tendency to procrastinate when drafting emails. I'm always thinking, "Why can't someone just create a template for me?" Sure, GPT can handle this, but I wanted a more efficient solution. So, I integrated an AI-powered email template generator within the platform, so users can easily draft emails, alongside tailored study recommendations to improve their productivity.
The platform also includes a progress dashboard, where users can track their learning achievements and posture health, providing a holistic view of their progress.
What I Learned
- Integrating posture detection: I learned how to utilize computer vision techniques to detect and monitor posture through webcam feeds, providing real-time feedback.
- Platform development: I enhanced my skills in web development, integrating multiple features such as study recommendations and personalized dashboards into a single platform.
- User experience: I focused on designing an attractive UI, ensuring the platform provides value without overwhelming the user.
Challenges Faced
- Posture detection accuracy: Ensuring the laptop camera could effectively detect posture without false positives was a challenging task that required tweaking and testing.
- Integrating multiple features: Combining posture monitoring, study recommendations, and a writing assistant into one platform required careful planning and coordination, particularly when it came to performance and user flow.
- Motivation and consistency: Creating a system that not only reminds users to correct their posture but also motivates them to stay consistent with their learning routine was an ongoing challenge.
What's Next?
The next steps for StudyPat include adding a student community chat feature, enabling users to discuss topics they're struggling with. Peer guidance can be invaluable, as someone who has already faced similar challenges can provide the best advice.
To boost engagement and make studying more fun, I plan to introduce daily puzzles with a leaderboard and coins that can be earned through participation. These can be used to unlock rewards or benefits within the platform, creating a more interactive and gamified experience for users.
In the end, StudyPat is the result of combining practical needs with fun, learning, and a little bit of creativity!
