Inspiration
I wanted to build Study Pal because I have been having this exact same problem. I've gotten so much into AI helping me that I fear to think these days, and things that I used to know have disappeared from my mind due to relying on AI's help. What goes wrong for students is that their minds get tired trying to read pages of PDFs. They focus on reading to finish the PDF, not reading to understand, which is bad for them. And most fail just because they don't have the right teacher, or pal, to study with them.
What it does
StudyPal is an AI-powered learning companion designed to help students move beyond simply reading or copying answers.
First, the student uploads their study material. StudyPal analyzes the content and organizes it into manageable topics, making lengthy study materials easier to approach.
Before teaching begins, StudyPal assesses what the student already knows through an initial test. It evaluates answers based on their meaning, rather than requiring students to use exact textbook wording.
Using those results, it identifies weaker topics and helps the student choose a learning style.
StudyPal then generates a lesson with explanations and visual aids, breaking down difficult concepts into simpler steps.
And learning doesn't stop at reading. Students answer quick questions, receive feedback, and can ask follow-up questions when something isn't clear.
Once they've worked through their learning path, they take a final test with new questions covering the same concepts.
If a student still struggles with a topic, StudyPal can explain it another way and provide another opportunity to practise.
StudyPal compares a student's performance before and after learning, helping them see where they've improved and which topics still need attention.
How we built it
The Devpost Learn Skill Pack was the part that made me think properly about how this project should be shaped. It was fun being asked questions by the AI about the project and the approach to take, which helped me think of a good solution and question whether the problem really exists.
The planning documents helped me organize the idea into a clearer plan instead of jumping straight into coding. They gave me a guide for what needed to be built and how the different parts should fit together. Building the project in smaller pieces also made the process easier to manage because I could focus on one part at a time and test it before moving forward. This helped me approach the project more systematically rather than relying entirely on AI to generate code.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest part was ensuring the AI actually understood the PDF and was not fabricating, plus figuring out what would make this site not just a chatbot, but one that actually helps the learners.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proudest of coming up with this project because the AI actually worked as intended, and it would help me and other serious learners over time.
What we learned
I learned that building a useful AI project takes more than having a good idea and generating code. Understanding the problem, planning the solution, and testing each part are equally important. I also learned that AI should support human thinking, not replace it. StudyPal reflects this lesson by using AI to help students develop their own understanding and become more independent learners.
What's next for StudyPal
StudyPal will be able to accept multiple learning materials on the same unit for reference, be able to provide motion animations explaining a point or the workflow of a topic, be able to research online, not just relying on the PDF, and more.
