Given that students are struggling to make friends online, we came up with an idea to make this easier. Our web application combines the experience of a video conferencing app with a social media platform.

What it does

Our web app targets primarily students attending college lectures. We wanted to have an application that would allow users to enter their interests/hobbies/classes they are taking. Based on this information, other students would be able to search for people with similar interests and potentially reach out to them.

How we built it

One of the main tools we were using was WebRTC that facilitates video and audio transmission among computers. We also used Google Cloud and Firebase for hosting the application and implementing user authentication. We used HTML/CSS/Javascript for building the front end.

Challenges we ran into

Both of us were super new Google Cloud + Firebase and backend in general. The setup of both platforms took a significant amount of time. Also, we had some troubles with version control on Github.

Accomplishments we are proud of

GETTING STARTED WITH BACKEND is a huge accomplishment!

What we learned

Google Cloud, FIrebase, WebRTC - we got introduced to all of these tools during the hackathon.

What’s next for Studypad

We will definitely continue working on this project and implement other features we were thinking about!
