Inspiration

One of our fellow students asking if any other students were taking an elective course, and nobody replied. He later asked the same question in a group chat, and nobody replied again. Recalling this student's situation, we decided that many students would be much better off with an easier way to find and work with other people.

What it does

Allows students to create or join study rooms. Students can filter these rooms by location, school, or subject. There is also an interactive map where students can look for study rooms in the area. Students are free to join any room on the map as they please, eliminating the need to search for others on other online platforms. Instead, users can simply find nearby meetups they are interested and just walk in, no planning or asking around required!

How we built

We built the app using Xcode.

Challenges we ran into

We could not get the android emulator running, which then prompted us to instead develop the app for iOS (in the short term). We also had many difficulties with our interactive map, which crashed the app most of the time. These difficulties were faced with lots of persistence, and lots of Googling.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are pleased that we got the map working. Since everyone on our team is new to mobile app developments, the results of our efforts have been very pleasing.

What we learned

We learned a lot about inner app mechanics and how many apps run internally. We also learned that developing apps is pretty difficult.

What's next for StudyMates

Refining the processes and server aspects to get a proper working app. We are excited for the future of this platform and its possibilities!
