StudyMate AI — A Smarter Way to Study

Inspiration

As a student, I understand how difficult it can be to organize study sessions, decide what to focus on, and revise topics effectively. I wanted to explore how technology could make studying more organized and less overwhelming.

That idea inspired me to create StudyMate AI, a student-focused study companion designed to help learners create study plans, organize revision tasks, and practice explaining concepts in their own words.

What It Does

The current prototype allows students to:

  • Enter a topic they want to study.
  • Create a simple study plan based on their available time.
  • View a list of study tasks.
  • Use an interactive revision checklist.
  • Enter a question and receive a practice prompt.

The goal is to make study planning simple and accessible through an easy-to-use interface.

How I Built It

I built the initial prototype using Python and Streamlit. Python handles the application's basic logic, while Streamlit provides the interactive web interface.

I used ChatGPT as a development assistant to brainstorm ideas, understand the code, plan the application, and work through implementation steps. I then used these ideas to create the initial prototype.

The current version uses predefined responses rather than a live AI model. Integration with an AI service and a qualifying Alexa+ experience remains future work.

Challenges I Faced

As a beginner programmer, one of my main challenges was turning an idea into a working application with limited development time. I needed to understand how the interface, user inputs, and Python logic fit together.

Choosing Streamlit helped reduce the complexity of web development and allowed me to focus on the core functionality. Another important challenge was distinguishing between an AI-assisted development process and an application that actually uses AI to generate responses.

What I Learned

Building StudyMate AI helped me learn how to:

  • Develop an interactive application using Python and Streamlit.
  • Break a larger idea into smaller, manageable features.
  • Use AI tools to support coding and problem-solving.
  • Review AI-generated code rather than blindly relying on it.
  • Identify the difference between a functional prototype and a production-ready application.

What's Next

My next goals are to improve the user interface, add persistent study-plan storage, integrate an AI model for personalized explanations and practice questions, and investigate the requirements for a qualifying Alexa+ experience.

StudyMate AI is an early prototype and a learning project. My aim is to keep improving it while developing the skills needed to build more useful applications.
