What it does

Inspiration

Students often struggle to understand difficult concepts, organize their study materials, and get quick answers to their academic questions. I wanted to build a learning assistant that makes studying more accessible and interactive with the help of AI.

That idea led to StudyMate AI — Your Smart AI Learning Assistant.

What It Does

StudyMate AI is an AI-powered learning assistant designed to help students learn more effectively.

Key capabilities include:

  • AI Question Answering: Ask questions and receive explanations powered by Google Gemini.
  • PDF Support: Work with PDF documents to support document-based learning.
  • Student-Focused Interface: A modern, dark-themed interface designed for a focused learning experience.
  • MCP Integration: A separate Model Context Protocol (MCP) server exposes an ask_studymate tool for interacting with the StudyMate AI backend.

How I Built It

I developed StudyMate AI using Node.js and Express.js for the backend, Google Gemini API for AI-powered responses, and PDF processing for document support. I also built a separate MCP server to expose StudyMate functionality through a structured tool interface.

I worked on connecting the different components, handling API responses, and troubleshooting integration issues to bring the project together.

Challenges I Faced

One of the main challenges was integrating the AI API, handling PDF parsing, and connecting the separate MCP server with the main application. Debugging these components helped me better understand backend development, API integration, and how AI tools can communicate with applications.

What I Learned

Building StudyMate AI helped me gain practical experience with AI API integration, Node.js, Express.js, document processing, and the Model Context Protocol. It also taught me how to troubleshoot real-world software issues and connect different components into a single project.

What's Next

I plan to continue improving StudyMate AI by refining its learning experience, expanding its study-focused capabilities, and making AI-assisted learning more useful for students.
