Inspiration
Students often spend hours searching through lengthy notes and PDFs to find answers to specific questions. We wanted to make studying simpler by creating an AI-powered assistant that helps students understand their own study materials quickly and interactively.
What We Built
StudyMate AI is a personalized learning assistant where students can upload PDF study materials, ask questions in natural language, and receive AI-generated answers with source-page references. We built the frontend using React and Vite, with a Python Flask backend, PDF text extraction using PyMuPDF, and Google Gemini API integration for AI responses.
What We Learned
Building StudyMate AI helped us understand how frontend and backend systems communicate, how to extract useful information from PDF documents, how to integrate generative AI APIs, and how to connect AI responses to relevant source pages.
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was integrating the AI API and handling model availability and usage limitations. We also worked through environment configuration, dependency installation, and connecting the React frontend to the Flask backend.
What's Next
We aim to improve StudyMate AI with more personalized learning recommendations, adaptive quizzes, progress tracking, and support for additional study formats to make learning even more effective.
