Inspiration:

Students often have to go through long notes before an exam and then spend additional time creating questions for practice. We wanted to make this process faster and more interactive. This inspired us to build StudyMate AI – Smart Study & Quiz Assistant, an AI-powered learning tool that can transform ordinary study notes into structured learning material and personalized quizzes.

What it does:

i) Finds key points. ii) Important terms and definitions. iii) Simple explanations and analogies. iv) Revision topics. v) AI-generated quizzes. vi) Quiz scores and performance analysis vii) Incorrect-answer identification and explanations. viii) Summarises.

How we built it:

The frontend collects the student's notes and quiz preferences and communicates with our Express backend through API endpoints. The backend sends the relevant information to the Gemini API and processes the AI response into structured study material or quiz questions.

Challenges we ran into:

One of the biggest challenges was getting the application and its dependencies to work correctly during deployment. We also had to handle situations where an AI request could fail because of API limits, temporary service availability, or unexpected responses. To make the application more reliable, we added error handling and model fallback logic on the backend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of:

i) Protected our Gemini API key by keeping it on the backend using environment variables instead of exposing it in the frontend. ii) Successfully developed and prepared the project for online deployment, turning our idea into a functional web application rather than just a concept. iii) Implemented AI-generated quizzes with selectable question counts of 5, 10, or 15. iv) Added difficulty selection, allowing users to choose between Easy, Moderate, and Hard quizzes.

What we learned:

i) Integrating generative AI into a real web application. ii) Connecting a frontend with a Node.js/Express backend. iii) Working with the Gemini API. iv) Handling API errors and unexpected responses. v) Keeping API keys secure using environment variables. vi) Creating an interactive quiz experience Deploying an AI-powered application online. vii) Turning an idea into a functional hackathon project

What's next for StudyMate-AI:

i) PDF and document uploads. ii) Voice-based study assistance. iii) Long-term learning progress tracking. iv) Subject and topic organization. v) Spaced-repetition revision. vi) Gamified learning and achievement badges. vii) Support for multiple languages
