💡 Inspiration

Students often know what they need to study, but they struggle to decide what to study first, how to organize their time, and how to prepare for upcoming exams.

We wanted to create a simple AI-powered tool that could turn a student's study needs into a practical and personalized plan.

📚 What is StudyMate AI?

StudyMate AI is an AI-powered study planning web application designed to help students organize their learning and prepare for exams.

It provides two main features:

  • Study Planner – creates a personalized study plan based on a subject, topics, available study hours, and learning goal.
  • Exam Planner – creates an exam preparation plan based on multiple subjects, individual exam dates, and optional topics.

⚙️ How We Built It

StudyMate AI was built as a web application using:

  • HTML5
  • CSS3
  • JavaScript
  • Bootstrap 5.3.8
  • Node.js
  • Express.js
  • Gemini API

The frontend collects the student's information and sends it to the Node.js backend. The backend communicates with the Gemini API and returns an AI-generated study plan to the frontend.

The application also includes retry handling and backup model support for temporary AI service failures.

📝 Study Planner

Students can enter:

  • A subject
  • One or multiple specific topics
  • Available study hours per week
  • A learning goal

The AI then generates a structured study plan with recommended study activities, schedules, practice suggestions, and exam preparation guidance.

📝 Exam Planner

Students can add multiple subjects and provide a separate exam date for each subject.

The AI uses the exam dates to prioritize subjects and creates a preparation plan that includes learning, revision, practice, and final preparation.

🌍 Real-World Impact

StudyMate AI is designed for students who find it difficult to organize their studies independently.

By turning study requirements into a structured plan, the application can help students make better use of their available study time and approach exams with a clearer preparation strategy.

🚧 Challenges

One of the main challenges was integrating an AI API into a working web application.

We also had to handle temporary AI service errors such as high demand and service unavailability. To improve reliability, retry handling and backup model support were added.

Another challenge was designing the application so that it remained simple and easy to use on both desktop and mobile devices.

🎓 What We Learned

Through this project, we learned more about:

  • Integrating AI APIs into web applications
  • Building a Node.js and Express backend
  • Connecting frontend and backend components
  • Handling API errors and retries
  • Creating responsive web interfaces
  • Building and testing a complete project for a hackathon
