Inspiration

Students often struggle to study because their learning materials are scattered across textbooks, lecture videos, and presentation slides. Finding the right information, understanding difficult concepts, and preparing for assessments can take a lot of time. This inspired us to build StudyMate AI, an AI-powered study companion designed to bring learning resources together and make studying more organized, interactive, and personalized.

What it does

StudyMate AI is an AI-powered study companion that helps students learn from their study materials in one place. Students can upload PDF textbooks or notes, ask questions about the uploaded content, and receive AI-generated answers with source references. The platform can also generate multiple-choice quizzes with answer options, correct answers, and explanations to help students test their understanding.

Built using Python, FastAPI, and Google's Gemini AI, StudyMate AI aims to make learning more organized, interactive, and accessible. Future improvements will include support for lecture videos and slides, quiz performance analysis, adaptive assessments, and personalized tutoring based on each student's learning needs.

How we built it

We built the backend using Python and FastAPI. The system allows students to upload PDF study materials and extracts their text for further processing. We integrated Google's Gemini AI to answer questions based on the uploaded content, provide source references, and generate multiple-choice quizzes with answers and explanations. We also developed API endpoints for submitting quiz answers, laying the foundation for future performance analysis and adaptive assessments.

Challenges we ran into

One of our main challenges was integrating the AI model with the backend and handling API errors. We also had to ensure that uploaded PDFs were processed correctly and that generated answers and quizzes were based on the available study material. Debugging API endpoints, managing dependencies, and testing the application through FastAPI's Swagger interface helped us understand how to identify and solve development issues step by step.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have developed the core backend of StudyMate AI, turning our idea of an AI-powered study companion into a working prototype. We successfully implemented PDF uploads and text extraction, integrated Google's Gemini AI to answer questions based on uploaded study materials, and created an AI-powered quiz generation feature with multiple-choice questions, answers, and explanations.

We are also proud of overcoming technical challenges involving API integration, backend development, and endpoint testing. This project helped us gain hands-on experience with Python, FastAPI, PDF processing, and generative AI. Most importantly, we took a step toward making learning more interactive, organized, and personalized for students.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained practical experience with Python, FastAPI, REST APIs, PDF text extraction, environment variables, and AI model integration. We also learned the importance of testing endpoints, handling errors, and connecting different components into a working application. Most importantly, we understood how AI can be applied to real educational challenges.

What's next for Studymate AI

Our next goal is to transform StudyMate AI into a more comprehensive and personalized learning platform. We plan to expand support beyond PDF documents to include lecture videos, presentation slides, and other learning resources, creating a unified, source-cited knowledge base.

We also aim to introduce adaptive assessments that adjust to each student's understanding, analyze quiz results to identify weak topics, and provide personalized tutoring with clear explanations and relevant source references. In the future, we want to build a system that tracks learning progress, recommends suitable study materials, and helps students focus on areas where they need more practice.

Our vision is to make StudyMate AI a reliable learning companion that helps every student learn at their own pace, understand concepts better, and prepare more effectively for assessments.
