StudyMate

Inspiration

I was inspired by the struggle of finding a suitable study partner in college. I wanted to create an app that would help students find compatible study partners to make their studying experience more enjoyable and effective as finding motivation and not getting distracted when studying with friends is a common struggle that many college students face.

What it does

StudyMate is a mobile app that matches college students with compatible study partners within their school based on their study preferences, classes, and availability.

How I built it

Utilized Figma to design the user interface. I was inspired by popular dating apps like Hinge or Bumble when creating the design and some of the features, since I, not only wanted to help other students to find a support system for studying, but also wanted to make the experience of finding a StudyMate itself enjoyable as well, that college students feel motivated to find their perfect [study] matches and achieve academic success.

Challenges I ran into

I wanted to implement the app with React, but because of time constraints I was not able to.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Finishing and submitting the project, as well as completing the design of the main features and functionalities on the app.

What I learned

Implementing and designing is hard, but asking the right questions and coming up with a concrete and solid idea is even harder. Apps or any other products are not just businesses or platforms, but they attempt to solve a problem. I learned once again the importance of identifying first the problem I want to solve as opposed to thinking of a product and finding its purpose later. I took a long time trying to identify problems I myself struggle with, and tried to become the user/target audience to implement the app in a way that could really help solve the problem.

What's next for StudyMate

Create a demo app that students at the UW can actually use, add other features like notifications, study trackers, etc., scale the project, get feedback from users and implement the app in different colleges.
