Inspiration
Choosing the right college and career path is one of the biggest decisions for a student, yet most students rely on random YouTube videos, outdated websites, or fake reviews. Many 12th-grade students feel lost because they don’t know anyone who can guide them honestly. At the same time, seniors who have already experienced college life have real and valuable knowledge — but there is no simple way for them to share it. This inspired us to build StudyMate, a platform that connects students with verified seniors and gives them real guidance, clarity, and confidence.
What it does
StudyMate is a student-to-student guidance platform that helps 12th-grade students and college seekers get genuine advice from real college seniors. The platform uses AI to match students with the right senior mentors based on their goals, interests, and background. Students can: ..Ask doubts about colleges, branches, fees, admissions, and campus life ..Connect with verified seniors for 1–1 mentorship ..Use an AI advisor for instant guidance ..View honest reviews written by real students ..Chat or call mentors securely ..Seniors can share their experiences, build their profile, and help juniors make better decisions.
How we built it
We built StudyMate as a full-stack web platform using: ..React.js for the student and senior interfaces ..Node.js/Express for backend APIs ..MongoDB/PostgreSQL for storing user profiles, reviews, and mentorship data ..AI/NLP models for mentor matching, doubt assistance, and content moderation ..WebRTC/Agora for secure audio/video communication ..Blockchain-lite verification to ensure senior profiles are authentic ..JWT authentication for secure login and role management ..Our team collaborated using GitHub, Figma for UI, and cloud hosting services to deploy the system.
Challenges we ran into
Designing an AI system that matches students with the “right” senior mentor. Ensuring trust by verifying seniors without making the process slow. Building a safe environment with moderation for student question. Handling real-time communication features like chat and calling. Creating a UI that is simple enough for school students. Making the platform scalable for a large number of users. Integrating multiple technologies (AI, chat, blockchain-lite, web backend) smoothly.
