Inspiration
As students, we found ourselves constantly context-switching between 5+ different apps every day: Notion for notes, Trello for tasks, Google Calendar for schedules, Discord for study calls, and separate Pomodoro timers. This fragmentation causes cognitive overload and breaks focus. We built StudyHub to solve this problem by consolidating every aspect of student life into a single, cohesive, dark-mode-first ecosystem.
What it does
StudyHub is an all-in-one productivity and collaboration workspace built specifically for students.
- Centralized Dashboard & Analytics: Tracks real-time focus time, streaks, daily goals, and weekly peer rankings.
- Academic Lifecycle Management: Features an interactive calendar, course scheduler, and automated exam countdowns.
- Kanban Task Management: Drag-and-drop workflow board with priority tags and deadline tracking.
- Advanced Study Tools: A markdown notebook with LaTeX support for complex math/science equations, paired with a customizable Pomodoro timer (Classic, Deep Work, Long Flow).
- Real-Time Collaboration Lobbies: Virtual study rooms (public and private) with live messaging for peer co-working.
- Contextual AI Study Assistant: An integrated AI companion to explain difficult academic concepts and assist with task planning.
How I built it
Frontend: Built with React.js / Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and Shadcn/ui for a responsive, modern UI.
Backend & Real-Time: Powered by Node.js and Express, utilizing WebSockets (Socket.io) to drive real-time study lobbies and messaging.
Database & ORM: Managed using PostgreSQL with Prisma ORM.
AI Integration: Integrated with LLM APIs to deliver contextual academic explanations.
Challenges I ran into
Real-Time Concurrency: Synchronizing state across multiple users in virtual study lobbies without latency.
Formatting Math Equations: Seamlessly integrating LaTeX rendering inside the Markdown editor without breaking live previews.
UI/UX Density: Packing scheduling, task management, collaboration, and analytics into one app without cluttering the interface.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Single Ecosystem: Replaced 5+ standalone applications with one integrated platform.
Minimalist UI: Engineered a clean, dark-mode native interface that reduces cognitive load.
Scalable Architecture: Designed modular, decoupled components capable of supporting live multi-user features.
What I learned
The Vision: Successfully replaced 5+ fragmented tools with a unified, dark-mode academic workspace.
Tech Mastery: Engineered real-time WebSockets, scalable Next.js/TypeScript state management, dynamic LaTeX parsing, and seamless LLM API integration.
Product Impact: Developed a product-first, AI-assisted platform designed to eliminate app switching, reduce cognitive overload, and optimize student focus.
What's next for StudyHub
