Inspiration

Learning technical subjects like Data Structures and Algorithms is not just about understanding concepts. Students also need to remember where they stopped, track their practice, and decide what to learn next. Without a clear record of progress, it can be difficult to maintain a consistent learning journey.

StudyFlow was created to explore how an AI study companion can make learning more organized, personalized, and continuous.

What it does

StudyFlow is a context-aware AI study companion that helps learners keep track of their learning journey.

  • Remember progress: Retrieve the learner's current topic and completed topics.
  • Understand learning needs: Track practice sessions, confidence levels, and areas that need attention.
  • Recommend next steps: Suggest whether to continue practising or move forward based on the available learning state.
  • Support interactive learning: Let learners explore concepts, answer practice questions, and receive feedback.
  • Update learning records: Record practice and confidence updates so the next recap reflects the latest progress.

How I built it

I built StudyFlow using a Python-based Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that exposes learning tools to Claude Desktop. These tools allow the assistant to retrieve learning recaps, update the learner's current topic, record practice sessions, and retrieve updated progress.

The demo follows a practical learning scenario. StudyFlow first retrieves the learner's DSA progress. The learner then explores Sliding Window, works through a practice problem, and asks the system to record the practice with a medium confidence level. A fresh recap verifies the updated learning state.

Challenges I faced

One important challenge was keeping the assistant's responses consistent with the actual learning records. A topic should not be marked completed simply because a learner has discussed it or attempted a problem.

I also needed to distinguish between the current topic, completed topics, practice history, and confidence. Verifying the updated recap after recording practice helped demonstrate that StudyFlow reflects the stored learning state instead of guessing missing information.

What I learned

Building StudyFlow helped me explore MCP tool integration, AI-assisted learning workflows, structured progress tracking, and the importance of verifying state changes. I also learned that a useful AI study companion needs more than explanations: it should help learners understand their progress and choose a meaningful next action.

What's next

StudyFlow represents my exploration of more context-aware and personalized learning experiences. The goal is to help learners spend less time figuring out where they left off and more time learning, practising, and improving.
