Inspiration
Study apps reward you with coins that mean nothing. We wanted your actual memory to be the power source for a game, built on the forgetting curve.
What it does
StudyFactory turns your study topics into a city: correct answers keep your factories powered, and topics you neglect cause brownouts. You review to restore power, upgrade buildings, and grow your base.
How we built it
We used Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind, and Supabase. The isometric city is hand-drawn SVG, and offline income is computed with a closed-form integral instead of a timer. We heavily leveraged CodeX, Claude Code, and other AI tools.
Challenges we ran into
Coordinating four people building the engine, UI, database, and quiz pipeline in parallel was the hardest part. We also hit deploy limits on Vercel's free plan and had to lock down Supabase's default permissions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We turned spaced repetition into real gameplay, with a Duolingo-style quiz, a Clash-of-Clans-style city, accounts, cloud saves, and themes. Everything shipped as one deployed app.
What we learned
Memory decay makes a natural game mechanic. A clean, tested core engine is what lets a team move fast without breaking each other's work.
What's next for StudyFactory
Upload PDFs to generate quizzes with Gemini, and add more question types. We also want a voice announcer for brownouts and upgrades.
