Inspiration
In KZN, millions of learners fail Grades 8-12 because they don't understand English explanations. As a student from Durban building everything on my phone, I saw my younger cousins struggle with CAPS Maths & Science. StudyBuddy SA was born to teach in Zulu + English via Alexa+ and Fire TV.
What it does
- Speaks in Zulu + English: "Chaza i-photosynthesis" -> explains in isiZulu
- CAPS-aligned: Grades 8-12 Maths, Physics, Life Science
- Voice-first for Alexa+ : "Alexa, ask StudyBuddy to explain algebra"
- Fire TV visual lessons for low-literacy learners
- PayPal Pay Later for premium notes: Parents can pay in 4x interest-free installments
- Low-data: <5MB per lesson, works on 2G
How we built it
- Frontend: React + Tailwind (mobile-first, built on phone via GitHub Mobile)
- Backend: Python (FastAPI) + Alexa Skills Kit SDK
- AI: OpenAI API with custom Zulu translation layer
- Alexa+: Custom skill with multi-language intents
- Fire TV: Alexa Presentation Language for visual cards
- PayPal: PayPal Checkout + Pay Later SDK for SA parents
- Deployed on: GitHub Codespaces (no laptop needed)
Challenges we ran into
- Building entire project on Android phone in Durban (no laptop)
- No stable WiFi - used MTN 4G with <1GB data
- Translating complex CAPS science terms into accurate isiZulu
- Integrating PayPal for SA (FNB withdrawal flow)
- Optimizing Alexa+ skill to understand Zulu accents
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Working Alexa+ skill that understands Zulu + English mixed speech
- 100% built on phone, proving you don't need a laptop to build
- GitHub repo: LUNGILEDLAMINI/StudyBuddy-SA with full code
- Demo video in Zulu: https://youtu.be/pMAamn_vwL8
What we learned
How to build voice AI for African languages, PayPal integration for emerging markets, and that constraints (phone-only) force better UX.
What's next for StudyBuddy SA
- Launch on Amazon Appstore for Fire TV
- Add 11 official SA languages
- Partner with DBE schools in KZN
- Integrate PayPal Giving for NGO school donations
