Inspiration: The inspiration behind StudyBuddy stemmed from our desire to create a vernacular app to help in studying science and technology for the non-English speakers. Recognizing the challenges faced by students, especially in diverse linguistic regions, we aimed to create a solution that could provide personalized academic support in multiple languages. We were motivated by the idea of leveraging AI and avatar technology to make learning more engaging, accessible, and effective for students worldwide.

Building the Project: StudyBuddy was meticulously crafted using cutting-edge technologies to ensure its effectiveness and user-friendliness. We utilized Unity for app development and integrated Gemini API for AI capabilities. Google Translate API, Google TTS, and Android STT were seamlessly incorporated for multilingual conversations, enhancing accessibility. ReadyPlayerMe enabled the creation of lifelike avatars, adding a personalized touch to the learning experience. Additionally, Google Custom Search API and Gemini Pro Vision were integrated to provide real-time information and solve complex problems efficiently.

What It Does: StudyBuddy serves as a multilingual AI talking companion, providing personalized academic assistance to students. For instance, consider Jack, a high school student preparing for his exams. Jack uses StudyBuddy with an avatar resembling Jill, his best friend since kindergarten, whose photo he has used to create a hyper-realistic avatar. Speaking in his vernacular Bengali language, Jack interacts with the app to clear his academic doubts, receiving detailed explanations in Bengali. He also utilizes the app to search for the latest information online. He takes photographs of previous years' question papers in the app to swiftly obtains solutions to complex problems in science and mathematics which is displayed in Bengali within a text box in the app. Excited about his academic progress, Jack shares these solutions with his friends on social media, showcasing his newfound prowess. Moreover, Jack utilizes StudyBuddy to efficiently complete his homework assignments, further enhancing his academic performance.

What We Learned: Throughout the development of StudyBuddy, we learned the importance of user-centric design and the power of AI in education. Understanding the diverse needs of students from different linguistic backgrounds, we gained insights into creating inclusive and accessible learning platforms. We also learned about the significance of incorporating advanced AI technologies to enhance the effectiveness of educational tools and promote interactive learning experiences.

Challenges Faced: Building StudyBuddy came with its share of challenges, particularly in integrating various technologies seamlessly. Ensuring compatibility across different devices and languages required meticulous testing and optimization. Additionally, designing a lifelike avatar creation process posed technical complexities that we had to overcome. Addressing these challenges involved collaborative problem-solving and continuous iteration to deliver a robust and user-friendly application.
