Inspiration
As students, we spend hours manually summarizing textbook chapters, creating flashcards, and writing quiz questions before we can even begin studying. We built StudyBuddy to eliminate that tedious manual prep work—letting students go from raw notes to active revision in seconds.
What it does
StudyBuddy turns dense lecture notes, textbook passages, or articles into a complete, interactive study kit with a single click:
- Executive Summary & Key Takeaways: Provides an instant, high-level overview of complex material.
- Interactive Flashcards: Digital flip cards with click-to-reveal answers for rapid memory recall.
- Self-Assessment Quiz: Interactive multiple-choice questions with real-time green/red feedback and a live score tracker.
- "Explain Simply" Mode: A one-click feature that breaks down complex technical concepts into plain, accessible language.
How we built it
- Framework & UI: Built with Next.js (App Router), TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for a clean, responsive, student-friendly web interface.
- AI Integration: Powered by Google's Gemini API (
gemini-2.5-flash) using the official@google/genaiSDK. - Structured Output: Configured Gemini with structured JSON output formatting (
responseMimeType: 'application/json') to ensure the generated summary, flashcards, and quiz options render smoothly and reliably on the frontend.
Challenges we faced
- JSON Formatting Consistency: Making sure the LLM reliably returns correctly structured JSON for quiz options and flashcards without breaking client-side UI components.
- Scoping the MVP: Resisting feature creep to ensure we delivered a completely functional, bug-free core user experience before the hackathon deadline.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working, production-grade Next.js application with zero linting/build errors.
- Successfully integrated Google AI Studio's latest Gemini SDK to deliver instant, structured educational outputs.
- Kept the interface minimal, clean, and accessible for fast studying.
What we learned
- How to construct strict prompts and leverage Google's structured output settings for seamless React integration.
- Best practices for managing server-side API routes in Next.js to securely interact with LLM endpoints.
What's next for StudyBuddy
- PDF & Audio Input: Allowing students to directly upload PDF lecture slides or record audio lectures.
- Export Capabilities: Exporting generated flashcards directly to Anki or Quizlet formats.
- Progress Analytics: Tracking quiz performance over time to highlight weak study topics.
