A community based free platform to look for study buddies in the neighborhood.

Inspiration

We were inspired by the students who struggle with staying motivated or need an extra help of their peers with hschotool work. They can use the app to find a study buddy in the neighborhood. We also noticed that it is a convenient way for Study Buddies keep looking at other buddies by just taking a photo of a homework question, then the text recognition technique will find buddies for you real quick, then you can study together.

What it does

Study Buddy allows users to look for people they can study with. Users use the app if they need help with homework or just look for someone to study with to stay motivated. They enter a subject like Calculus, Chemistry, etc. and the app shows people in the area interested in studying the same thing. If the user sees a potential study buddy, all he needs to do is to send a message and plan a meeting

How we built it

We used MarvelApp to build the UI and coding on Java, Android Studio with Firebase and some libraries.

Challenges we ran into

Struggles with the layout, for example, it can be annoying to put the boxes in the right places. Also, it was our first time to use techniques such as Text Recognition to let the app "see" the texts in the picture and tag it. Most of the time we did not know how to use those libraries and we have spent a lot of time on looking for samples or tutorials.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The app, especially the Text Recognition part finally works, it can read user's inputs. We're happy with this prototype. We think we may extend this prototype in the future.

Use of the MarvelApp to design the UI and a lot of libraries of Android such as Text Recognizer, Camera, Firebase.

What's next for StudyBuddy

The next steps will be improving the online video communication such as using platforms like Skype to let students discuss questions online. Also, the location feature will be enhanced to display available students that are nearby you on Google Map. The next stage after would be to work with the LinkedIn platform to showcase and verify the "Featured Skills & Endorsements" that StudyBuddies have.
