StudyBuddy
Making Learning an Experience and Not a Hassle
Inspiration
The idea of creating StudyBuddy started based on our own experience as international students studying in Korea, where most lectures are taught in Korean. Therefore, after a lecture, we often had to record, transcribe, and translate the lecture, match it with the slides, and find ways to review what we had learned. This process often required multiple tools and consumed a lot of time.
We realized this process could drain our energy, leaving us unable to focus and give our all when it came to actually understanding the lecture.
What it does
StudyBuddy is an AI-powered learning assistant designed to simplify the process of studying. Users can upload their lecture recordings and learning materials, and select their preferred language. StudyBuddy processes the materials and generates a personalized StudyPack containing:
- Smart Notes
- Transcript and Translation
- Audio Lesson
- AI-generated Quiz
How we built it
StudyBuddy is a web application built with Next.js, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for the frontend, with a Python, Claude API, WhisperAPI, and FastAPI backend.
The web application is built with a simple workflow and user-friendly design, where users upload their lecture and learning materials, and the system processes the content using AI to generate a personalized StudyPack.
Challenges we ran into
Since this is our first hackathon, our biggest challenge was turning our idea into a realistic MVP within the limited time. We also learned how to collaborate using GitHub while working on different parts of the project.
Another challenge was figuring out how to integrate AI to process our materials so that the generated study resources would be useful and relevant to the original lecture.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As our first hackathon, we are especially proud of building StudyBuddy from the initial idea and interface designs into a functional web application while learning new technologies and collaborating as a team.
We are also proud of creating a workflow that brings multiple steps of the lecture-to-study process into a single platform.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how to develop a product as a team. We gained hands-on experience with frontend development, backend integration, GitHub collaboration, UI/UX design, and integrating AI into an actual application.
Most importantly, we learned that building a useful AI application starts with understanding a real user problem and finding ways for AI to meaningfully improve the user's experience.
What's next for StudyBuddy
Future improvements for StudyBuddy could include supporting more languages, improving synchronization between lecture audio and slides, providing more personalized learning recommendations, creating a more customizable study environment where users can listen to music while studying, tracking learning progress, and improving the quality of AI-generated quizzes and study materials.
