What it does
How we built it## Inspiration
Many students in rural and low-income areas study on cheap phones with limited data and no money for paid apps. Most focus-timer and study apps need an account, an internet connection, or a subscription. I wanted to build something free that anyone can open on any basic phone and use immediately.
What it does
Study Sprint is a free, offline study timer and task list.
- A 25-minute focus timer for study sprints
- A task list where you can add, tick off, and delete study tasks
- A self-measurement counter that tracks your completed sprints and total focus minutes
- No sign-up, no account, no internet needed after the page loads
- Your data stays on your own device
How I built it
I built it with plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in a single file, so it has no dependencies and runs on any browser, including older and low-end phones. Tasks, sprint count, and focus minutes are saved with the browser's localStorage, which is what lets it keep working offline and remember your progress after a refresh.
Challenges
- Keeping the app small and simple enough to run on low-end devices
- Making sure the timer, task list, and saved progress all stayed in sync
- Testing the sprint-complete behavior without waiting 25 minutes (I temporarily shortened the timer)
What I learned
I learned how to scope a project to fit a deadline, how to use localStorage for offline data, and how designing for accessibility (no sign-up, works offline, big buttons) changes the choices you make.
What's next
- Custom timer lengths and break timers
- Multiple languages
- A weekly progress chart
- Installable as a home-screen app (PWA) for fully offline use
