Inspiration
The Method of Loci, a method of memorization inspired our project. The Loci technique, also known as the Memory Palace is one of the most successful methods. The Memory Palace technique is a memorization strategy, based on visualizations of familiar spatial environments to recall information. “Loci” is the Latin term which means “places”. The technique involves envisioning a location or physical space that you are familiar with. You can associate terms and important information to various waypoints/landmarks in that place. As you use memories based on spaces that are familiar to you, your brain already knows the specific space, which then enables you to recall the terms and facts you associate with the space. We thought about how everyone has one path they take almost everyday. They can use this repetition of space (and sometimes time) to their advantage as a study tool, by associating landmarks with terms, definitions, and concepts on their daily walk.
What it does
This is a proof of concept
How we built it
Unity, Python scripts using OpenAI API
Challenges we ran into
the time crunch, working with chatgpt prompting, etc.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the rationale and ideas behind the project, and we feel it is a useful study tool!! And with the short period of time we had to make this, the visuals are pretty solid.
What we learned
We learned about OpenAI's API, the method of loci, and worldbuilding in Unity using Unity asset packs!! Fun!
What's next for Study Island: A Method of Loci Inspired Study Tool
Future direction would include personalized study plans using ChatGPT's assistant functionality and even adding a scoreboard. Gamifying it even further with points for keeping a study streak, making it an AR/MR game, etc. Much to come!
