Inspiration
Studying alone online can be incredibly isolating and unproductive. We noticed that many students struggle to stay motivated, manage their time, or find reliable study partners who share their exact goals. We wanted to build a solution that transforms solitary studying into an engaging, community-driven experience—making learning collaborative, structured, and accessible to everyone, anywhere.
What it does
Study Buddy is a collaborative learning platform where students can seamlessly connect and study together. Key capabilities include: Smart Matching: Automatically pairs peers based on shared subjects, courses, and exam timelines. Virtual Study Rooms: Offers dedicated spaces with text chat, shared digital whiteboards, and video tools. Focus Tools: Features an integrated Pomodoro timer to manage group focus sessions and breaks effectively. Resource Sharing: Allows users to effortlessly upload, organize, and crowd-source notes, flashcards, and quizzes
How we built it
We designed and built the project with scalability and smooth user experience in mind: Frontend: Built using modern components to ensure a responsive, clean, and intuitive user interface across devices. Backend & Database: Leveraged reliable backend services to handle user authentication, real-time messaging, and secure data storage. Real-time Features: Implemented live web-socket connections to power the real-time collaboration tools and virtual study room synchronization.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest hurdles was ensuring flawless real-time synchronization inside the virtual study rooms, especially keeping the shared whiteboard and group Pomodoro timers perfectly synced across multiple users simultaneously. We also had to optimize data fetching to keep the peer-matching system fast and accurate as the user base grows.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully implemented a fully functional, lag-free real-time shared whiteboard for collaborative brainstorming. Created a highly intuitive, clean UI/UX that keeps students focused rather than distracted by complex settings. Built a working prototype from scratch within the tight hackathon deadline.
What we learned
We learned a massive amount about handling state synchronization for multiple concurrent users in real time. We also deeply explored user engagement strategies—understanding what specific features keep students motivated and productive without leading to digital fatigue.
What's next for Study Buddy
AI Integration: Building an AI study assistant that automatically generates flashcards and summaries from uploaded lecture notes. Mobile Apps: Expanding the web app into dedicated iOS and Android applications for seamless on-the-go studying. Gamification: Introducing customizable badges, streaks, and leaderboards to further incentivize daily productive study habits.
