Inspiration
Unless you get lucky, looking for open locations to study at on a busy campus with limited study space often involves entering a building, searching multiple floors for an available study space, then realizing that there are none at the current location before continuing the search in another building. There is nothing more frustrating than spending more time searching for a spot than you do studying for your classes, especially for those who are simply looking to sit down and work between classes, meetings, or whatever busy schedule the average student has. Study Buddy allows students to see what spaces are available at whatever location in real time to minimize time spent searching for a space and maximize productivity.
What it does
Study Buddy keeps track of the number of usable spaces in different areas on campus. Once a building or area with available spaces is selected, it also shows the room numbers or locations of the listed spaces so that students can easily navigate to the available spaces. Students simply press a button in their space to designate it as occupied
How we built it
We surveyed several common locations at which students study at and added spaces to a database. We developed the website in HTML, CSS, and javascript. We used React.js and Tailwind CSS for front-end frameworks and Node.js and Express.js for the back-end.
Challenges we ran into
It was the first time creating a full-stack application for most of our team members, and learning to use unfamiliar frameworks was quite challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating an application from scratch that could potentially be of use to the UTD community.
What we learned
We learned several frameworks and how to design and implement an application.
What's next for Study Buddy
- Explore prototypes for physical buttons/switches
- Implementation of an interactive map
