Inspiration
Over the Covid-19 pandemic, many teens and young adults have experienced isolation, loneliness, and anxiety. Sites like Zoom and Discord have helped to bring people together. Our prototype website "Study Buddy" takes elements from these sites and applies them to students. Study Buddy is meant to give students a chance to find friends to study with.
What it does
The Study Buddy prototype has currently has 3 main pages: Home Page, Chat, and Friend Page. The home page gives information on the Study Buddy site itself. The chat page allows users to talk with each other whether it's one-on-one or in a group. The friend page allows the user to see their account info such as number of friends, number of study groups, and list of friends. The user can also search for users and add them to their friend list. Study Buddy is responsive and can be used on mobile devices.
How we built it
We built Study Buddy with the vscode ide and used Github for version control. Using these technologies we were able to collaborate and work on different parts of the sites remotely. Some of the other technologies used in making Study Buddy were HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Bootstrap, and React.
Challenges we ran into
Due to working remotely, each team member used different tech and had different programming styles. This made combining sections of the site difficult at first, however in the end we were able to connect the pages of the site together.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our user interface as well as our systems with the site. Particularly we are excited about the chat and buddy system.
What we learned
We learned many new things this hackathon the list includes collaborating through Github, CSS styles, responsiveness, React Native, using React js packages like nodemon and expo. This project has helped us become better collaborators.
What's next for Study Buddy
Video Calling: Students will be able to get into calls to study and talk with their friends.
Teacher Tools: Teacher tools will consist of attendance AI and hosting review study sessions.
