Inspiration

Planning revision is hard. Students spend hours making the perfect study timetable, only for it to become useless after quickly falling behind, often due to procrastination. Our AI powered study planner and assistant combats both of these problems. In addition the app makes effective revision planning more accessible to students with less support in this area.

What it does

Our project generates a dynamic revision timetable according the user's preferred revision slots, using SMT solving. This allows them to regenerate the timetable whenever they fall behind, and always be studying effectively. Further, with the user's study timetable data, if the user strays from this timetable by using non-educational websites (e.g. Instagram or Netflix) we detect this using AI and close their tab.

How we built it

The UI consists of a Chrome extension for ease of use. The backend, developed in Python, uses the Z3 SMT solver, learned from our Symbolic Reasoning Course (COMP50009), and produces an ICS file for import into Google Calendar and dynamic updates, via the iCalendar library. AI was used to determine whether tabs are productive or not, which was done through OpenAI's API.

Challenges we ran into

During the development of the tab closing AI, closing Google and other useful tabs was frustrating. This was mainly because we couldn't disable the extension easily, since it just closed the tab! This was remedied by adding a sensible list of acceptable URLs and also modifying the prompt.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud we were able to use our knowledge and apply our learning to a real-world situation. We are also proud that we were able to learn so many new technologies in such a short amount of time.

What we learned

We learned a lot more about SAT solving as we had to generate our own variables and build everything from scratch this time. We also learned a lot about Chrome extensions and querying APIs with Google's updated privacy restrictions.

What's next for Study Buddy

We want to take it to the next level and build more features to help real students with their study problems.
