Inspiration
StudyBuddy was something our group members had always wanted. Having a bot built into discord that could allow collaborative studying from anywhere in the world could revolutionize learning as we know it. On top of this, we've always wanted an AI to act as a tutor to answer specific questions. We hope to see this StudyBuddy added to many servers to help students of all ages and academic levels.
What it does
Study Buddy is a discord bot that uses OpenAI's GPT-4 to act as an all-in-one tutor. StudyBuddy is able to create live kahoot-style events that can host multiple users at once, create flashcards based on user prompts and .txt files in discord and on StudyBuddy's dedicated website, and act as a general guide and mentor for students.
How we built it
For the construction of our project, we broadly had three main portions: The Study Buddy discord bot which takes study subjects from the community to be transformed into interactive Kahoot-style quizzes and flashcards, A web interface for a more specialized flashcard experience, and an openai API that underlies the above two interfaces to use openai's gpt-4 model to generate studdy materials in a usable format.
Challenges we ran into
A reoccurring challenge we had to overcome while working with such a broad language model like gpt-4 was the problem of formatting responses to be easily handled with our interactive solutions. Another challenge was the use of the discord bot API to display our generated study tools in a way that could allow for collaboration in community studying together
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Going into this project, none of us have worked with openai in the past or AI in general, really! The same pretty much goes for working with discord bots. What we have been able to accomplish through this project has granted us new skill in what is becoming a more and more influential section of our industry. We also learned a bunch about the Discord Bot API and how it can be integrated with other tools to provide a collaborative experience within an online community.
What we learned
With Study Buddy, we gained new knowledge into the inner workings of integrating AI tools into interactive frameworks, both on the web and through common communication tools like discord. Plus, being STUDY Buddy, we learned a whole lot of new facts while debugging our calls to gpt-4!
What's next for Study Buddy
StudyBuddy is only just getting started. Our next steps for StudyBuddy's development are a leaderboard for the live kahoot quiz events, adding and improving the current mentor mode, speeding up GPT-4's flashcard and quiz question generation, adding a plagiarism checker, and adding a scholarly article search mode. Some goals we would like to reach after completing development are adding multi-language support and search engine integration as a StudyBuddy command
